Crail is one of the prettiest and most visited towns in the East Neuk of Fife. With a history dating back over a thousand years, it has retained a lot of its older buildings. It recognises that its future requires modest growth while ensuring that its historical links are maintained through its architecture and environment.
The Town Hall is unique in Scotland, with its Dutch influenced design: the Parish Church, dating from the twelth century, is beautifully set among mature trees, and the harbour, with its close knit fisherman’s housing, is world famous. The main thoroughfares, Marketgate and High Street, are fine examples of architecture that, while buildings were often built in different centuries, blend together into a very pleasing townscape.
Crail Preservation Society has launched a new Award - “Creative Crail” - to recognise good design and workmanship in new buildings, renewals, and extensions to existing property. The Awards will also recognise hard and soft landscaping and any activity that will enhance or maintain the ambience of the town. The Awards are also intended to encourage others, by example, to preserve and improve Crail.
Award: £500
